As the public’s interest in electric vehicles continues to grow each month so does the need for residential and commercial electric vehicle chargings stations. An Electric Vehicle Charger (EVC) is a piece of equipment that supplies electrical power for charging plug-in electric vehicles and can be installed within a garage or exterior of your home or business.
If you have purchased an electric vehicle or plan on purchasing one in the future, you will need to consider charging your vehicle at your home or business. EVCs allow you to charge the battery of your vehicle at your home or business during day and evening hours.
There are 3 main levels of charging stations.
Level 1
A Level 1 Charger can be installed into a 120-volt circuit at home. Depending on the vehicle and battery, the charger will take 16 to 20 hours to charge your vehicle. Typically, a Level 1 charger only provides 3-5 miles of charging per hour.
Level 2
A Level 2 Charger can be installed into a 240-volt circuit at home or workplace. This charger is most popular and convenient for home and business charging stations due to providing a full vehicle battery charge in 3 to 6 hours depending on vehicle and battery types.
Level 3
A Level 3 Charger or Direct Current Fast Charging (DCFC) are installed in commercial settings due to having to use a 480-volt circuit. Level 3 chargers can be found in service plazas, shopping centers, and other public access properties. This charger provides your vehicle battery with about an 80% charge in 30 minutes to an hour.
KC Larson is also partnering with Siemans and Leviton to purchase electric vehicle charging stations.
